Most of us take our names for granted. It is one of the first things we learn, and it is an inherent part of our identity. Nonetheless, names have history and context. They are often chosen for a reason. Our names can create hidden connections between us and other people, as well as to places, subjects, or concepts.
With the Name Frames experience, we are set to discover some things we didn’t know about our names. There are many ways to approach this task, and coming up with new, innovative approaches to this mini-research project is an essential part of the experience. Regardless of how you approach this part of the exercise, it begins with asking questions.
Thinking in questions is an integral part of our Creativity Operating System. Our ability to wonder, which we naturally embody as children, degrades over time as we form a rigid mental model of the world and take many things for granted. When we challenge our assumptions and question what we think we know, we strengthen our ability to think critically and solve problems creatively.
The second part of Name Frames leverages one of your discoveries and uses it as raw material for creating something new. You can look around you for something you connect with one of your discoveries. Alternatively, you can imagine and stage a photograph based on one of the new things you’ve learned.
